Thanks to @fishing4eskimo for killing it at Warner Bros today
I thought I’d let everybody in on what I’ve been doing lately in the little spare time I have…
I have been working on a new tutorial DVD. In the past, I was focused on teaching Photoshop techniques but this time (although there will be many Photoshop parts on it), the package will be more about lighting. There will also be a great deal about business on there too, since I get many questions about that kind of thing in my inbox every day. Of course the delivery will be a lot more slick, and offer a lot more different content than the previous DVD. The two will go hand in hand, and expand knowledge further into deeper/more important areas. At this point I am so busy with commercial work, I cannot do workshops barely at all. I would rather offer my tutorials as packages to those interested in buying it with everything pre-recorded due to all the positive feedback I got from the first disk. I figure it’s much easier and cheaper that way for anybody who has ever wanted to come to a lighting workshop of mine.

Over the past 2 years since the last DVD was completed, I feel I have become a lot better at what I do and have a lot more to teach. Already I have been working for the past couple months recording new lessons and writing down my ideas. However, I require your help- I’d like to know what you would like to see on it. Let me know if there are any certain pictures of mine or things I’ve done that you think would be beneficial to explain. E-mail me- joey@joeyL.com
On the flip side-

I’m happy to claim that part of my job now includes rapping. Hah! You see, on my previous tutorial DVD myself and a guy named James Fox created a stupid cheesey 80s electronic song to help promote the disk. It was also in spite of the 80s-early 90s pop star also named Joey Lawrence that plagues me wherever I must sign a VISA receipt. This time, I’ve taken it a step further and have recorded not 1 but 2 rap songs at my friend Kent Sheehey’s studio. I’m the worlds worst singer so we used a lot of auto-tune. I plan to record a music video and release it the same time as the disk in August. I have a lot of work/roadtrips ahead of me, so I cannot fully guarantee that date at this time.
Here is a breif clip from “Nikon Girl”… A love story about a Canon guy that falls in love with a girl who uses Nikon. Nobody in the photo community will accept the couple and their love is forever doomed. It’s Romeo and Juliet meets DPChallenge.com. Extremely geeky stuff.
I have also recorded another song but that one is even more secretive.
Anyway I’d be happy to hear some feedback,
Joey
Chantalle Lovery:(Jun 21st - 05:30) Haha that kent sheehey, always turnin out da hits.
ivan:(Jun 21st - 07:57) emails not working, so I'll just throw in some suggestions here. I think a lot of people have a lot of interest in the traveling aspect of your photography. I think it would be nice to see the planning involved with these trips. If someone were to tell me to plan out a two month trip to africa, I wouldn't know where to begin. and just from hearing that clip, i predict there will be atleast one canon lens not fitting in an f-mount.
Dan:(Jun 21st - 08:42) Dude sounds good I really like itbut i also liked the old joey l. song on the dvd lol you rock bro...
Liraj:(Jun 21st - 09:31) For some reason, I can't figure out what kind of light that you're holding is. a 10 inch brolly box with all transparent sides maybe?
rob:(Jun 21st - 20:23) hahah the song is funny as, cant wait to hear the rest. :P i'll send you an email tomorrow about the dvd. i know i have a few questions.
Joey L:(Jun 21st - 22:17) Ivan- thanks for the suggestion, a travel section is a great idea! And you are right about the song, there IS a line about a big 'ol canon lense not fitting inside a nikon... Liraj- That light the assistant is holding is a proglobe!
nat:(Jun 22nd - 09:47) i just played your song preview to my commercial photography class and you gots tha laughs :)
Samantha Nandez:(Jun 22nd - 20:20) LoL Nikon vs. Canon, I can see the relation to romeo and Juliet. Nice rap!
lara jade:(Jun 24th - 15:33) so there's nothing regarding jl and lj in this one? haha.
Steven M:(Jun 24th - 21:28) can't wait for the dvd and to the clip.....wow haha
kent sheehey:(Jun 24th - 23:26) Joey, I really think you should give up on the whole photography thing, and start taking rapping about photography more seriously.
Suman Chakrabarti:(Jun 25th - 05:55) I'd love to see some info on doing photography for concerts. The action is fast and the lighting is complicated.
ivan:(Jun 25th - 11:31) ps. nice stereo set up in that pic haha
Shermy:(Jun 26th - 03:18) Wow, nice rap :P Haha.
Jon:(Jun 27th - 22:28) Dude that song already sounds killer. I was contemplating buying your tutorial cd (as soon as money permits) but I think I might just wait for your upcoming one.. or who knows, get both! Anyway I've always been a big fan of your work. I just signed up for Twitter so I'm currently trying to figure out if you have an account or not. Off to search some more!
Spencer:(Jun 29th - 22:47) Really liked the last DVD, very helpful and influential. What I'd like to see in the new one is the total process for one image. And I mean total, from how you got the client or job, coming up with the concept, finding the location, the shoot (gear, lighting, wardrobe, make up, set dress), and then the post process, and any re-edits the client may have asked for. I think that would be super helpful, and a first for any tutorial I've ever seen.

Peter Miranda:(Jul 01st - 16:38) Joey, I learnt more in 10 minutes from your last dvd than i did with 100hours practice. sometimes you just have to be shown things. im a huge fan of your ps skills, looking forward to this new dvd... hopefully some shoots with a 5d? SOME MORE FRESH PS SKILLS? take care jl. regards, pete
Joey L:(Jul 02nd - 21:40) Peter- Thanks, glad the current DVD worked out for you. Spencer- A total process is definitely what this DVD will be about. The format is more of an interview/workshop lecture. My friend Cale is coming down next week to to help film everything. Jon- My twitter is joeyldotcom Lara Jade- oh don't worry, you have a shout-out in one of the rap songs... haha
Hannu Makela:(Jul 03rd - 12:14) Greetings from Finland! The song sounds like an instant classic already :) The story sounds like ye olde rivals can both listen to it with equal emotional attachment. There's nothing like an ageless story about forbidden love to induce a tear or two. Prepare to get a lot of plays if they end up on ThouTubes.
Noilt:(Jul 06th - 20:41) Perfect!
