Just finished uploading everything to my Flickr account http://www.flickr.com/photos/joeyldotcom/
I’m not exactly sure what sparked the video editing rampage I undertook this week. Something deep inside told me it was time to finally edit my video from Siberut, Indonesia. Perhaps it’s because my friends Will and Cale took this trip to visit the Mentawai tribe almost exactly one year ago… Or, perhaps it’s because I miss Ricky and the medicine men and want to go back.
So when it came time for me to leave Siberut last year, I promised the Mentawai I would find a way to get them new fanny packs, it was the least I could do for all they had done for me. Their old packs they traded for had seen better days, and the cheap material didn’t last long in the conditions. When I got home, I shipped some nice leather ones to my apartment from another kind of rainforest- Amazon.com
Isabella:(Apr 07th - 05:25) it looks very exciting :) I love the two first pictures
zeez:(Apr 07th - 06:08) nice gesture of sending them the waist pouches:)
Bille:(Apr 07th - 06:20) Good on you and a good solution to repay them...
Morgan:(Apr 07th - 06:37) Fantastic story, how banal it may seem. Owning up to a promise must be hugely important for them, and this will have created bonds i\'m sure. Always a great read. Morgan
Troy Freund:(Apr 07th - 07:02) Good job, Joey; that\'s the follow-up that\'s so important. Thanks for being a good example for all of us out here. Keep up the great work; be well.Sincerely,Troy
chi:(Apr 07th - 10:23) the smell of leather fanny packs will give away their location when hunting. You\'ve doomed them all! hahha

Jill:(Apr 09th - 01:20) I\'m a long-time reader of your blog, Joey- and this post made me want to comment because it\'s a little different from your others. There are no fancy, processed images- only real snapshots of genuine friends. I really admire that you treat your subjects with so much humanity and respect, not as though they\'re just another assignment... and you can really see how happy they are to know that, too! This took a lot of coordination! Also, I think I\'m in love with you. haha :) Keep up the great work!
TAKKI:(Apr 10th - 07:54) This is a great story, thanks for sharing

Francois:(May 07th - 06:56) Amazing, they must have been so happy. I remember they were eagerly waiting for that when I visited them in December!
Kosmo:(May 10th - 11:52) Undeniabley, you have some great talent, but even if this guy went to see the same people, and shot with the same \"style\", I don\'t call it a copy. I can understand why you feel that way, but when you look at his website, this style apply to all other travels he has done...I found another photographer (Laurent Auxietre) who as the same style as well, and even some exactly same pictures than you - (he told me you did the same trip.)If he made the travel to do it so far, he must be as passionate..
niharika:(May 17th - 19:01) hey..really very nice..this is the first time i have visited your page n couldn\'t resist leaving a comment.I will be comin around more now :)

photographer tampa:(Jan 17th - 11:56) Amazing story. It\'s a little to much wildness for me :-) but it looks like you had a lot of fun there. I have the feeling everyone likes smoking. The pictures are amazing as usual. Nice shoes by the way. Natascha
Justin @ Saskatoon Photographer:(Jan 18th - 03:11) wow Joey, your stuff just rocks - even the behind the scenes stuff! Its amazing what you went through to for those shots, the trip of a lifetime for sure. Its amazing to see your talent in someone a few years younger than me - give me inspiration and motivation!
imelda:(Jan 20th - 11:57) Oh, Those photos are absolutely amazing even i m from Padang i never go to Mentawai island until here, so sad isn`t. n Padang n Mentawai Island, now very quite since after earthquake 30 Sept2009
ANNIE:(Feb 01st - 22:44) it\'s beautiful shots, beautiful scenery and people. i would really love to go to Mentawai, though i live in Indonesia, it\'s pretty hard to go there. Reading this article (http://thejakartaglobe.com/home/seismologist-this-earthquake-is-a-flea-compared-to-the-tiger-thats-coming/333163) and then watched the video makes me scare to what will happen to them.
Brian hinesley:(Feb 16th - 12:10) while i do agree that a sustained community with education can benefit in todays society, I feel that the need to \"supposedly evolve these people\" to what we see as the right way of living is disgusting, and feel that tribes of all descent are the closest to true living with mother nature, and keeping a balance of life, and information that really matters in perspective. Lovely photos of interesting people, i must say!
Quincy:(Mar 16th - 21:13) You, sir, make me want to shit in a hat and stuff it over your head. Purely jealousy of course. Keep it up brother
Christopher:(Mar 21st - 14:05) I don\'t know how old you are (just came to your work an hour ago), but you\'re obviously following the right path. I did a lot of this crazy shit in my 20s and 30s and, now that I\'m pushing 50, I\'m really glad I did. Pushing the limits when you\'re young will allow you to grow old in peace (assuming you survive). Rock on.

Kelly Hofer:(Jun 05th - 20:36) Joey,What struck me first about this expedition that was personal work, is that you took time to not only shoot a beautiful culture in a beautiful way, with lights ect, but that you also took the time and brought along friends that shoot video. I know well, and they do too, that their culture is a dying one, and recording it was an act that i admire you for. I really like the whole concept of bringing fashion type lighting to what is tratitionally shot with some grittiness. it\'s valuable.
Jennifer Wolowic:(Jun 05th - 21:21) Great doc and a fantastic collections of photos. The respect you have of the Mentawai is present in every moment. As an anthropologist I applaud your inclusion of the shaman at the end who speaks directly to the rest of us and showing the collaboration between the crew and the people you photographed. Thanks
Sebastien G.:(Jun 05th - 22:02) Wow... awesome Joey, you\'ve been upgrading a bit since the tutorial DVD you\'ve made in DPChallenge Forum ;) ... Love your work... keep it up
Sterling:(Jun 05th - 22:16) thank you
Cory:(Jun 05th - 22:35) I love the background information on this video Joey. Making the connection with the Mentawai is very important than just busting your camera out the moment you arrive. Well done and thank you fore educating the world on international people skills.
Brian Dawes:(Jun 06th - 01:16) Incredible journey, thanks for sharing Joey...
Tommy:(Jun 06th - 02:36) Its nice to see the video that goes along with the journal entries from the trip. The editing was great. I loved it.
Peter Hearl:(Jun 06th - 02:59) Hi Joey, what a great video. Love the bit with the tattoo, its a great shame that people like the Mentawai and there culture is disappearing. You are doing a great job to keep there culture alive. Keep up the excellent work, Peter
AntonioA:(Jun 06th - 03:06) Absolutely brilliant and sad in a way, to hear them talking about the disappearance of their culture. You had quite a privilege being with them and did a fitting job of capturing them for posterity. I noticed the camera had a filter holder, did you use any filters on this? or was it just a UV or polarizer?Anyways, nice vid, it almost felt Nat Geo!
jayponko:(Jun 06th - 04:05) this was an amazing documentary joey! thanks for bringing us closer to the mentaway through your pics and the vid and cales amazing shots :)

Lyudmila Nairnyak:(Jun 06th - 19:45) AMAZING.... COOL JOEY
Heather Strooh:(Jun 06th - 21:40) It\'s sad and scary to think of the tribes and cultures that have already been lost... some we may not even know of. If no permanent record were kept, no tools left... there is no way for us to know. It\'s really sad. I\'m glad you guys were able to go there and document this. Seeing this will preserve the Mentawai in the minds and hearts of all of us who have seen this vid and the photos.
Miikka:(Jun 07th - 02:15) Thanks!Well done!
Hung NguyenC:(Jun 07th - 02:21) Amazing documentary film. I love the last minutes.
Jason the Saj:(Jun 07th - 04:26) This was really fun to watch Joey. Thank you for the very intimate look into where your photos come from, and the people in them.My brother-in-law has traveled to a few places like this. I hear the stories of being covered in leeches and what not. But seeing video of such travels is quite amazing.Plus it\'s sans leeches. LOL- JasonPS - I love the photo of you up to your shoulders in water holding the camera. Now there\'s a real photographer.
Filipus Dasawala:(Jun 07th - 10:26) Hi Joey! Just watched your video from Vimeo. I\'m glad you made this video, which made me more eager to visit every places in my country (Indonesia). In one month time, I\'ll be visiting one of remote islands of Indonesia. Chances are high that I\'ll encounter such culture, similar to, and endangered as Mentawai culture I like your photographs very much. I\'d like to immortalize it through pictures. Any tips that you can share perhaps? Thank you! :D
Rick Wenner:(Jun 07th - 11:27) This is by far my favorite video you\'ve created so far. It did not even feel like 16 minutes at all since I was so intrigued by this. Excellent job man.

Matt Murphy:(Jun 08th - 05:15) Joey - just happened upon your Vimeo feed whilst \'Working at Home\' ... and clearly not really working :)I was in Sumatra, back in 1997 - and never made it to Siberut. tho heard lots about it. I did spend 8 weeks on the rest of Sumatra, however, and fell in love with the culture and the people.I am very much a keen amateur photographer - but today you have inspired me to dust off my DSLR and get back shooting. I might even scan in some old film from Sumatra.. good luck.

Heinz Schmidt:(Jul 05th - 19:41) Hi Joey,Your work with the Mentawai is really awesome. We so desperately need to document and preserve the culture and ways of life of these people and other tribes around the world before they are all westernized. The Levendu tribe in South Africa even know of a tree, called the Masetado (elephant bush) that is a cure for Malaria. Great work, keep it up.Heinz
Allison:(Jul 07th - 01:31) Joey, thank you for working to preserve this culture. It\'s hard to think that the Mentawai could be forgotten someday, and that so many cultures have already been forgotten.

Alyssa Barajas:(Jul 14th - 16:43) Joey, this video is great, it\'s so inspiring to see you guys out there travelling the world and meeting such fascinating individuals. The still images you have contributed to this video are phenomenal. The lighting is so subtle but adds so much to each shot. Looks like you are shooting with a Mamiya, are you using a digital back or are you shooting film as well? Great job!
Emilie White:(Jul 14th - 18:29) Hi Joey,This video is amazing. From the story, to the images, to the editing. It must such an amazing, eye opening experience. We learn already so much in the photographs you took of the Mentawai, but this video allows us to discover more about this community. Amazing work. I am a huge fan.Looking forward to the next travels. All the best, Emilie
Michael Schmidt:(Jul 15th - 17:22) Wow! Very cool journey and very touching video. It\'s crazy how we go about our normal everyday lives and luxuries and take for granted what we have. Thank you for allowing us to learn about the Mentawai tribe and their culture. You continue to impress and inspire me with each and every one of your videos and images. Keep doing what you are doing because its not only making you feel good but it is educating others as well. The tribe seemed very happy to have your company.
Elena Hernandez:(Jul 17th - 02:36) Simply Amazing Joey!... the amount of work involved in creating the art you want to portray...Truly gorgeous work

Ed Stone:(Aug 13th - 06:33) I love this. What struck me the most actually was the photos of the older shaman and then younger generations. It really shows how the western world is influencing and destroying cultures. I think this is something your should pursue further.
