“Faces of a Vanishing World” Premiering September 27th | Aug 16th

I don’t really know the proper way to word this, but I’ve got a documentary TV series coming out. Don’t worry, it’s not a reality show and I haven’t turned Jersey Shore on you. It’s a documentary about my life as a photographer.

The pilot will be airing on Ovation TV on September 27th, 2010 at 10pm. The show will also be syndicated later (no set date yet) by National Geographic worldwide, Access and I Channel. There are still networks that are yet to be confirmed. You can check out the Ovation press release here. Right now I am working on the official release, so if you don’t get Ovation, don’t panic. We will be releasing a digital download and DVD and a blog travel story that is causing me to decipher my messy journal writing and transform it on the computer

We’ve been working on getting the pilot finished for nearly 2 years, and now we finally have the air date. After some initial hype in the industry on the 1 hour pilot we shot, we just got commissioned 4 more episodes at the same length that will feature my shoots and trips in different places around the world. The good news about that is since it’s a documentary I don’t really have to do anything that I normally wouldn’t do, (except get mic’d up, which is really annoying.)

I’m afraid that’s all I can say for now. Oh, I can also say that we filmed the pilot on my second trip in Ethiopia and it features Ryan McCarney and Anteneh Endale Mamo.

I’ll keep you all updated when I can say more…

Stay tuned, for real.

People with Joey L Tattoos | Jul 14th

People have likely been decorating themselves since the dawn of mankind. You can see different techniques all around the world today. I’ve seen with my own eyes the meaningful scarification of Ethiopian tribes, the gentle sago patterns stick-poked into the Mentawai in Indonesia, and the intricate neck tattoos of some Coptic Christians. Needless to say, when someone get’s my own work on them forever… It feels good.

The first is a pretty good one. A loyal Protest the Hero fan got my bloodied and bruised portrait of Rody. “No, I swear… the tattoo has fully healed.”

Then, of course, there’s the inevitable Twilight tattoos. I’m sure there’s more around the globe than these two…

And most shocking… The Real Joey Lawrence tattoo. Yup- my face on this guys leg. When he scratches his leg I can feel it on my own face, kind of like a voodoo doll. Should I be flattered or terrified? It’s a portrait of me when I was a young tot in Kashmir, India, by the amazing fine artist and painter Les Goodman.

And finally, I’ll share something on myself. (I wouldn’t want any of the above tattoos on me…). My arm looks just my portrait of Biwa Bermo of the Karo tribe in Ethiopia… (You’ll meet Biwa soon in a upcoming documentary)

Black and white photo is by Ingetje Tadros

Thanks to Robert Hernandez in Madrid, Spain. I traveled all the way to Spain just to get tattooed by him, and it was worth the journey for one of the world’s greatest tattoo artists.

zachbreaux:(Jul 14th - 18:16) That\'s Stan\'s Leg!

sandi:(Jul 14th - 18:35) The Biwa tat is amazing! Damn!

Rob Hammer:(Jul 14th - 19:27) That\'s more then a little crazy. You might want to get an extra deadbolt.

Tim M.:(Jul 15th - 01:24) That's craziness man! Excited to see that new documentary

peter hearl:(Jul 15th - 02:59) What a great looking tattoo.

Tom Snell:(Jul 15th - 05:14) Amazing job. Out of interest, do you know if he used white ink for the highlights or plain skin?Check out Piotrek Taton for portraits (http://www.tatontattoo.com/) as well if you\'re still in London..

Joey L:(Jul 15th - 06:58) Hey Tom- Yes he used some white ink for the highlights but the plain skin tone is just grey faded into my skin tone.

Pim Hendriksen:(Jul 15th - 09:58) OMG. That tattoo of a portrait of you......priceless! Who has Joe McNally on his legg? Anyone? haha

P:(Jul 15th - 14:02) That\'s it. I\'m getting Zack Arias inked on my leg. ha!

Michael Schmidt:(Jul 15th - 17:00) Joey your tattoo is freaking awesome. Well worth the travel to Spain. Honestly if i were you i would travel back to Ethiopia to show this guy that he is a part of you now and how much he had an impact on your life. You are forever inspiring me Joey, keep up the fantastic work you love.

Jenna Julianne:(Jul 15th - 17:11) Frickin Sick!! Joey your tattoo has the most perfect detail... the \"painting\" is so beautiful! I\'ve never gotten a tattoo...but at least you got a meaningful one, and not a picture of a dumb wolf ha! and to have your face on someone\'s leg? holla! but its way creepy at the same time-unless it was your mum? nope still creepy... but awesome! chow! :) anyone want obama? didnt think so.

Geoff:(Jul 15th - 19:12) Haha...wow...no words...

Stan Jones:(Jul 16th - 01:14) Pretty sure your face got touched up a couple months ago... bet you had a good time with that one. I feel like a huge creeper now, hahahahahha.

Elena Hernandez:(Jul 17th - 02:14) You know...my family comes from Spain...I am wondering if Robert is related to me...then again Hernandez is like smith in this country...LOLReally amazing Tattoo of your art joey...Biwa is going to be honored you think so well of him to tattoo your body with his image...

Sean:(Jul 17th - 02:42) Wow! Thank you, Joey, for the incredible images. I deeply admire your personal work and I envy your talent to create images that will educate generations to come of disappearing or lost civilizations.

Sander van der Veen:(Jul 19th - 04:36) Looks really cool, except for the loose skin :P

Rozzy:(Jul 25th - 20:19) Joey, its fantastic!!! Congratulations, your artist was brilliant!! Nice to see something else meaningful captured forever on you.. hows the other big one coming?

Danie Nel:(Jul 28th - 02:54) Bra, I\'m not sure if I\'d be comfortable with that. Eish. Can\'t imagine someone tattooing one of my packshots on their legs! :)

derek:(Jul 29th - 19:57) Ha how funny Robert hernandez is next on my list! He tours some times in the U.S

Jon:(Aug 04th - 11:14) Some of those tattoos are really spooky, had to look twice to make sure that it wasn\'t a photo. I\'m not sure that I\'d have the cap out of Twilight tattooed on my body though - what happens if his career goes wrong! The bottom tattoo is really good though, something unique and stylish.

Pathompong(Patrick):(Aug 10th - 07:03) Hi,joey this is my first time looking at your web site.It\'s very very nice image.I\'m thai guy. I just wanna say\"I love your image.\"

Troy Grover Photographers:(Aug 12th - 00:23) That\'s crazy! Wow

Kegan Sant:(Sep 01st - 21:42) That Protest The Hero photo/tattoo is such a throwback! Good shoot man.

The Mentawai – Behind the Scenes Documentary Video | Jun 05th

I’m not exactly sure what sparked the video editing rampage I undertook this week. Something deep inside told me it was time to finally edit my video from Siberut, Indonesia. Perhaps it’s because my friends Will and Cale took this trip to visit the Mentawai tribe almost exactly one year ago… Or, perhaps it’s because I miss Ricky and the medicine men and want to go back. Enjoy this video, running time is 16:54.

To read the original blog/journal entry, with more information and drama that went on behind the lense, click here

Video shot by Cale Glendening
Video Edited by… me!
Lighting Assistant / Translation Willem Isbrucker
Guiding / Translation by Ricky Vhoetra and Gejeng
Soundscapes by Benjamin Bates
Still camera, abused and muddied, sponsored by Phase One

All the Mentawai interviews were translated on location with Ricky, Gejeng and Will. However later to sync up the words to the interviews, I had to make a few Skype calls to Ricky and play him the audio. It is very hard for me to understand Mentawai and Indonesian. Because of that, some of the words might not be perfectly arranged in the time line, but the content is.

aradilon:(Jun 05th - 20:03) Amazing video, well made and full of good material!

Andrew:(Jun 05th - 20:04) Wow. Thanks Joey for documenting the Mentawai. It was really eye opening and thought provoking.ps. holy shit, you\'re crazy for carrying that gear into those conditions! Amazing stuff!

Kelly Hofer:(Jun 05th - 20:36) Joey,What struck me first about this expedition that was personal work, is that you took time to not only shoot a beautiful culture in a beautiful way, with lights ect, but that you also took the time and brought along friends that shoot video. I know well, and they do too, that their culture is a dying one, and recording it was an act that i admire you for. I really like the whole concept of bringing fashion type lighting to what is tratitionally shot with some grittiness. it\'s valuable.

Jennifer Wolowic:(Jun 05th - 21:21) Great doc and a fantastic collections of photos. The respect you have of the Mentawai is present in every moment. As an anthropologist I applaud your inclusion of the shaman at the end who speaks directly to the rest of us and showing the collaboration between the crew and the people you photographed. Thanks

Sebastien G.:(Jun 05th - 22:02) Wow... awesome Joey, you\'ve been upgrading a bit since the tutorial DVD you\'ve made in DPChallenge Forum ;) ... Love your work... keep it up

Sterling:(Jun 05th - 22:16) thank you

Cory:(Jun 05th - 22:35) I love the background information on this video Joey. Making the connection with the Mentawai is very important than just busting your camera out the moment you arrive. Well done and thank you fore educating the world on international people skills.

Brian Dawes:(Jun 06th - 01:16) Incredible journey, thanks for sharing Joey...

Tommy:(Jun 06th - 02:36) Its nice to see the video that goes along with the journal entries from the trip. The editing was great. I loved it.

Peter Hearl:(Jun 06th - 02:59) Hi Joey, what a great video. Love the bit with the tattoo, its a great shame that people like the Mentawai and there culture is disappearing. You are doing a great job to keep there culture alive. Keep up the excellent work, Peter

AntonioA:(Jun 06th - 03:06) Absolutely brilliant and sad in a way, to hear them talking about the disappearance of their culture. You had quite a privilege being with them and did a fitting job of capturing them for posterity. I noticed the camera had a filter holder, did you use any filters on this? or was it just a UV or polarizer?Anyways, nice vid, it almost felt Nat Geo!

jayponko:(Jun 06th - 04:05) this was an amazing documentary joey! thanks for bringing us closer to the mentaway through your pics and the vid and cales amazing shots :)

Flemming Bo Jensen:(Jun 06th - 13:51) Thanks Joey for this great insight into your trip and the Mentawai culture and way of life. I loved the video and I really loved the Mentawai people, what a shame their beautiful culture is dying.

Heather Strooh:(Jun 06th - 21:40) It\'s sad and scary to think of the tribes and cultures that have already been lost... some we may not even know of. If no permanent record were kept, no tools left... there is no way for us to know. It\'s really sad. I\'m glad you guys were able to go there and document this. Seeing this will preserve the Mentawai in the minds and hearts of all of us who have seen this vid and the photos.

Miikka:(Jun 07th - 02:15) Thanks!Well done!

Hung NguyenC:(Jun 07th - 02:21) Amazing documentary film. I love the last minutes.

Jason the Saj:(Jun 07th - 04:26) This was really fun to watch Joey. Thank you for the very intimate look into where your photos come from, and the people in them.My brother-in-law has traveled to a few places like this. I hear the stories of being covered in leeches and what not. But seeing video of such travels is quite amazing.Plus it\'s sans leeches. LOL- JasonPS - I love the photo of you up to your shoulders in water holding the camera. Now there\'s a real photographer.

Filipus Dasawala:(Jun 07th - 10:26) Hi Joey! Just watched your video from Vimeo. I\'m glad you made this video, which made me more eager to visit every places in my country (Indonesia). In one month time, I\'ll be visiting one of remote islands of Indonesia. Chances are high that I\'ll encounter such culture, similar to, and endangered as Mentawai culture I like your photographs very much. I\'d like to immortalize it through pictures. Any tips that you can share perhaps? Thank you! :D

I did spend 8 weeks on the rest of Sumatra, however, and fell in love with the culture and the people.I am very much a keen amateur photographer - but today you have inspired me to dust off my DSLR and get back shooting. I might even scan in some old film from Sumatra.. good luck.

Heinz Schmidt:(Jul 05th - 19:41) Hi Joey,Your work with the Mentawai is really awesome. We so desperately need to document and preserve the culture and ways of life of these people and other tribes around the world before they are all westernized. The Levendu tribe in South Africa even know of a tree, called the Masetado (elephant bush) that is a cure for Malaria. Great work, keep it up.Heinz

Allison:(Jul 07th - 01:31) Joey, thank you for working to preserve this culture. It\'s hard to think that the Mentawai could be forgotten someday, and that so many cultures have already been forgotten.

Sören:(Jul 10th - 04:36) Very interesting...!!Since I saw u\'re first pics, I was interesting in that.Thanks for sharing.Good luck und best wishesSoeren

Alyssa Barajas:(Jul 14th - 16:43) Joey, this video is great, it\'s so inspiring to see you guys out there travelling the world and meeting such fascinating individuals. The still images you have contributed to this video are phenomenal. The lighting is so subtle but adds so much to each shot. Looks like you are shooting with a Mamiya, are you using a digital back or are you shooting film as well? Great job!

Emilie White:(Jul 14th - 18:29) Hi Joey,This video is amazing. From the story, to the images, to the editing. It must such an amazing, eye opening experience. We learn already so much in the photographs you took of the Mentawai, but this video allows us to discover more about this community. Amazing work. I am a huge fan.Looking forward to the next travels. All the best, Emilie

Michael Schmidt:(Jul 15th - 17:22) Wow! Very cool journey and very touching video. It\'s crazy how we go about our normal everyday lives and luxuries and take for granted what we have. Thank you for allowing us to learn about the Mentawai tribe and their culture. You continue to impress and inspire me with each and every one of your videos and images. Keep doing what you are doing because its not only making you feel good but it is educating others as well. The tribe seemed very happy to have your company.
