I'm very proud and excited to announce my new website and blog, designed and engineered by the very talented Ross and Kostya at Flosites. Although the overall feel is the same, I wanted to bring out the neutral earth tones in my images, so I chose a warm ash gray background and a simple font color scheme to match. A lot of my photo series have narrative and text to go along with the images, but I didn't want to distract the images. I got inspiration from a lot of fine art books, where images go along with minimal text to still tell a story.

Although my new site design is quite simple, the beauty of it is in it’s hidden features. Different browser sizes and ratios scale the main images, as well as manipulate the rows and columns of thumbnails. It’s coded all in HTML5 with a WordPress back end. Why HTML over Flash? Flash is dead in the water. No iOS devices such as iPhone’s or iPads will read Flash (a bold move from Apple), and because of this and many other drawbacks, it’s slowly becoming an outdated technology.

The nicest feature to be added to the site is still being coded, which will be a fully functional store for my tutorial DVDs. The newly designed store should launch in a couple weeks.

There are 2 brand new image galleries now online. Origin, a personal series from the volcanic island of Tanna in Vanuatu, and Ice Road Truckers: Deadliest Roads, a shoot I did for the show in History channel. Both have some interesting side stories to come out of those trips, but I will write about this in future posts.

I hope you enjoy the new site. If you find any bugs (I’m sure there will be a few), please let me know!

JL

That's a welcome move. The new look is better & I could subscribe to the feeds in google reader (which wasn't working for me sometime back). Origin series is beautifully captured. Keep up the good work. Regards Prem Anandh P.

The new site is sick. It looks and works great on my desktop computer, and also on my iPhone. An A+ for Flosites. The new colors feel right too.

A big improvement Joey! Having the portfolio & blog on one site is a good move and the auto scaling is the way to go too! You are right - Flash is dead and prevents SEO, not that you need to worry about that! ;-)

At the end of every Lighting course I show the students few sites for inspiration and your site is a among the sites I show for creative lighting and ideas. I was surprised to see the new site and I find it much better then the old one. Especially the loading time had improved and it looks more modern IMO. Anyways - Good luck and god bless.

Agree with Tomer, great loading time, hardly any delay and surprisngly, the text against the background is really easy to read. Layout is simple and clear to navigate but it doesn't detract from the images as they really stand out, well done, great job!

I can imagine the functionality to make the images autosize to different screen sizes and browsers really took something. I just made all my images fixed size as a way of avoiding dealing with that problem, but I'm starting to realise I'll need to fix that up soon.
